Weekend Rides 8 – 9 March

Introductory ride for new juniors at Cornwall Park

Saturday 8th March

An easy ride to give new juniors (who aren't otherwise committed with prior engagements) a chance to ride together in a bunch and enabling us to check out bikes etc, ahead of the bunch ride out to Muriwai scheduled for Sunday, the following day.

Some returning riders from last year (juniors and seniors) will be required to assist with the newer riders – Mr Johnson will be arranging this. Any volunteers happy to be involved should please let him know. ( d.johnson@ags.school.nz )

Please could all new riders meet in the big carpark in Cornwall Park, by the band rotunda near the BBQ area, at
2 pm on Saturday.

This ride will not be an overly long or difficult session and should be finished by around 3.30pm.

Bunch rides for all cyclists out to Muriwai

Sunday 9th March

All boys that are available to ride should assemble at Auckland Grammar School in the carpark by Gate 3. We will be riding out in 3 distinct bunches to head out by varying courses to arrive at the Porters property out at Muriwai. (Thanks to the Porter family for hosting us.)

Group 1 : 7.15 am meeting time, departure by 7.25

- for the more advanced riders looking for a more difficult ride. (eg. Those doing Tour of Northland or the Te A Tour etc.)

Approximately 90 Km

Group 2 : 7.30 am meeting time, departure by 7.40

- for riders with some experience looking for a moderately difficult ride.

Approximately 70 Km

Group 3 : 7.45 am meeting time, departure by 8.00

- for newer riders or those looking for an easy to moderate ride (together with any riders willing to assist with the new riders).

Approximately 50 Km

There will be adult riders with each group (any volunteers please let me know by email rjustice@xtra.co.nz )

There will also be lead and follow cars with lights, at least for groups 2 and 3 (again any volunteers please let me know by email rjustice@xtra.co.nz )

Could parents please ensure all riders have what they require in the way of fluids for the ride – sports drinks or water etc. Could parents also ensure they look after any special dietary requirements or medication for their cyclists. We will also have additional water and drinks as well as snacks available in the lead and following vehicles. If the drivers could have a first aid kit with them in the following car that would be helpful.

Once the groups get to Muriwai the last couple of hundred metres up to the farm location will need everyone to dismount and carry their bikes up a cobbled pathway. We don't want people damaging their cleats, so it is suggested you have a pair of sneakers in a plastic bag put in the lead or following vehicle accompanying your bunch. These shoes will also be needed to wear out at the farm. It is also suggested you bring along a change of clothes, including something warm to wear and a towel all in a bag that will go out in the accompanying vehicles.

On arrival at the Porter's property a well earned brunch will be provided for the boys and those adults that have ridden out, or assisted with the driving etc. Thanks in advance to a band of parents who will be assisting on the day.

In the spirit of the Grammar Cycling Family any siblings of Grammar riders (both brothers and sisters), in addition to parent riders, are welcome to join in one of the bunches. We will have cars with racks available for any riders in groups 2 and 3 who find the going at all difficult and need to get a ride to the finish.

There will be a nominal cost for the day of $20 per rider (Grammar boys and their siblings, but not applicable to the parent riders and drivers and other volunteers). Louise Foreman will be handling the collection of money.

Anyone who has equipment for some sports activities out at the farm (badminton, volley ball, petanque have been suggested) should let Aaron Gate or Tom Williams know, as they will be responsible for organizing some light hearted sports competition and team building activities after the ride.

Following this it is anticipated that boys will be ready to be picked up and taken home by early afternoon. It is suggested that parents who are coming out to the farm at Muriwai (directions and a map will be provided) should try to be out at 246 Taiapa Road by around 2pm, for coffee and muffins that will be provided and some socializing, before we aim to have everyone away by 2.30pm.

The land line phone number out at the farm is 411 8737 (mobile reception around the Muriwai area is limited).

If you are unable to pick up your son please endeavour to have your son's return transport organized with another parent. Any unresolved issues will be sorted by the management team – we won't leave anyone stranded !

Should the weather look inclement please check your emails around 7am on Sunday morning as a notice will be posted there in the event of cancellation of the ride. Those still keen for some training despite the weather can still then go out on the Royal Oak bunch ride at 8am.
